The halfling falls onto his back with blood covering his face. He drops his rapier to his side and looks up at you. He opens his mouth to speak but just ends up coughing blood instead. When he's finally able to get some words out he speaks slowly. "I would gladly submit to you and allow you to be the winner of this fight. But I don't think the guards will allow that." He falls onto his back and throws his arms over his head. He lays completely still and closes his eyes. "Finish it quickly, I'm in a lot of pain right now."

He doesn't try to stay alive so he accepts his death and dies. When he dies the spell goes away (assuming) The people applaud you for taking out the assassin but are disappointed that they were unable to actually watch the majority of the fight. The orcs come out to claim the body of the deceased.

(Upon the Authority of Zach, spell effects last until the spell ends regardless of whether their caster is conscious. I had to ask for when the gnome got you with hideous laughter and Aeryn took her out in the same round.)
(Also, did the darkness follow him? I thought he ran out of it to do his touch attack.)

If the darkness was following the assassin and is still around them, Elliott would have thrown the rapier away from them before he dealt the killing blow. Elliott exits the arena and sits for a minute thinking on the courage with which the assassin faced his death. For a "strike from the shadows" type, Elliott was surprised at how he accepted his fate. He opens his book and reads more awaiting his next fight.

When you are called in for your next fight a Paladin stands in front of you with a great deal of determination in his eyes. "Next we have a very exciting match for you! Elliott the undying, a undefeated rookie. Against the shield of Palor himself!" The man readies his sword and holds up his tower shield. "Your slaughter stops here gladiator. I'll make sure you never want to fight here again."

Elliott calmly closes his book and stashes it in his pocket. He stands up and walks right up to the Paladin's face. "I didn't crawl out of Baator to be put down by a celestial dog. Run on back to your cathedral, man of faith, before I show you my works."

(I'm not sure if this is diplomacy or intimidate, I don't think anyone would actually believe you escaped the nine hells unless you were a bard)

The only thing you can see of the Paladin is his eyes from behind his helmet. He stares at you with righteous anger. "Violence is the only thing Hell dwellers like you understand. So let me communicate to you the glory of the righteous!"
"It looks like things are getting pretty heated up down there. This should be a good fight to watch. Are you ready?! Begin!" The Paladin lifts his sword up to his shoulders and you can now see that it is quite large.
