[Elliott the Undying]

It's a beautiful day in Suzail. Draxor has spent the last year training under Elliott the Undying in the Undying Mercenary Company. You hear some yelling in the barracks next to yours. A moment later, your own barrack door bursts upon allowing the morning sun to spill in along with a familiar voice, "Rise and shine, gentlemen. Squad 1 and 2 have about a minute head start on you. First squad to do a lap around the arena, lift the heavy rock gauntlet, and do another lap gets to taze the last squad. Don't forget your swords, they need exercise too." Master Elliott moves on to wake up the next barrack and the members of your squad grab their wooden training swords and start hustling out the door to form up and start running.

(The wooden training swords have a non-lethal shocking enchantment to discourage "dying" during training. Getting tazed is no fun.)

As Draxor is dreaming of the food from the dining hall, Elliot quickly shatters Draxor's dream that it was all reality. Damn, I don't want to get tased again. Draxor thought. He been on the receiving side numerous times, and his arm is still aching from it, despite the healing pad.  He quickly scrambles out of bed, put on his armor, and collect his training sword, and starts pushing his squad to a more brisk pace

After the warmup race and your squad's subsequent tazing at the hands of squad 2 is breakfast. Everyone gets a sausage and egg sandwich with a juicy ripe peach. Elliott makes a short announcement congratulating a pair of students who finished their first contract and orders students to break off into their squads and drill steel wind with partners and a dummy. You drill for 15 minutes or so and Elliott breaks away from teaching a complicated maneuver for hitting multiple enemies to your squad leader and waves you over, "Draxor, on me." He directs you over to an unused training dummy. "I noticed you've been getting much more consistent with your steel wind. Now I'm going to swing at you, I want you to counter my strike with wall of blades and counterattack me and this dummy with your steel wind in the same motion. Ready?" He waits for you to be ready then swings a training sword in an overhead strike at you at a practice speed.

His practice swing is a 12. His roll to block your steel wind on him is at least 38.

Why the right arm? I think as I inhale my juicy sandwich, take a swig of water, and devour the peach. As I was drilling, Elliot told me to come over so of course I go toward my master. I prepare wall of blades, I want this day to be an improvement, specially with how the race ended.

(I think the training swords should be Bswords the more I think about it. Wall of blades is an opposed attack roll, so it's BAB+str+1 masterwork bonus same as your attack roll. It will be the same attack and damage stats with an extra d6 of nonlethal electric damage. For steel wind you make two separate attacks I believe, so I need one more attack roll.)

You easily deflect Elliott's swing, Elliott blocks your steel wind, and your second strike hits the dummy. "Great job.  Those maneuvers will serve you well. Come on down to live training with me, Draxor. Everyone's beaten the rats, but I think you're more than ready to take on the wolves. If you need a few minutes to prepare, that's fine. Just let me know when you're ready." You know that the wolf stone is the rite of passage for students to prove they are ready for merc contracts.

If you take time to prepare, Elliott summons a person sized devil from one of the stones and stabs it to death with its own spear. When you're ready, Elliott activates the stone and 3 demonic wolves appear from it and immediately attack you.

(For this fight don't worry about the d6 nonlethal damage on the practice sword. You'll get your metal sword and scale mail after this challenge, but you probably have a padded armor for practice. So your base AC will be 13 with that armor on.)

The wolves circle around you and attack. One wolf hits your ankle for 7 damage and tries to trip you (Roll a strength check to resist the trip attempt). The other two miss.

[Elliott the Undying]

The second wolf trips you onto the ground. However, you somehow manage to do steel wind and whack it and another wolf over the head nice and good with your wooden sword from the ground. The one that tripped you poofs into a dark brown sand. The other two wolves both bite at your arms and legs for a total of 11 damage. Elliott steps forward with sword in hand, "Find a way, Draxor. Come on!"

(When on the ground you get -4 AC, -4 to attack rolls, and can't use stances. Standing up provokes an attack of opportunity from both enemies who may re-trip you with that attack. You could try rolling a tumble check to avoid the attacks (DC 15), but a failed tumble check will waste your whole turn and still invoke attacks of opportunity. Also remember to give yourself +1 to attack rolls for your martial lore check.)
