Re: Draxor in the King's Forest
As you fumble around with the writhing mass of wings, Aeryn tries to hold it still with one hand and runs it through with his sword for 12 damage. The creature lets go and flops a few feet away before collapsing and not moving. Aeryn drops his sword and holds his neck with both hands. "Well that's a first. What the heck was that?" On investigation, a giant bat lies motionless on the ground before you. Aeryn looks at you with wide excited eyes. "By Heironeous, is that... Did we just take down a dire animal? Is that dire, or just big?" After your response, he suggests that you both keep watch from right outside the door for the rest of the night. The boy is very interested in looking at your wounds and brings the bat inside to look at. He tells you to get a torch next time so he can get a better view of the fighting, and he asks if Aeryn is going to turn into a vampire. Aeryn assures him that wasn't going to happen while giving you an unsure look.
If there's anything you want to do, before taking watch/sleeping do it now. Otherwise, 300 XP.
Aeryn attack: +8 (enough)
Damage if hit: +3 (12)

Re: Draxor in the King's Forest
(How close are you to leveling up?)
Nothing interesting happens for the remainder of the night. In the morning, the boy pulls out a leather satchel, says a word, and fresh food appears in it. Aeryn chews his dried travel rations with disdain. "So, guys. Let's get a move on. This buried treasure isn't going to find itself." He holds his hand out. "Pack 'em up!" The tent folds itself back up into the little cloth.
You guys walk closer to the penninsula and from a distance you see that the penninsula (Which is several miles long) has several small hillocks with dead trees on them over its landscape. The boy holds up the map. "Uh... I've got only 1 tree on my map. You guys brought shovels, right?"

Re: Draxor in the King's Forest
Aeryn furrows his brow. "I'm certainly not digging any holes with my sword, that's for sure. Well, kid, this is your adventure. We're here to keep you safe, but you're going to have to find the treasure."
The elf child rummages in his bag, retrieves the bottle, and gets the map. "There's gotta be a clue somewhere, either on the map or in the trees. I'll try to find something on the map, you guys look at the hills and trees."
Aeryn sighs, "Uuuh... Suuuure." Aeryn looks around at the trees.

Re: Draxor in the King's Forest
(Thank goodness you broke 10)
You notice something odd about the trees. There are birds in the rolling fields picking through the grass, but you don't see a single bird in a tree. After half a minute of looking at the landscape, Aeryn sighs, "I got nothing." "Well, get something. Maybe..." The elf child holds his map up to the sun. "Nope, no secret messages there."

I am not much for the wilderness and sightseeing, but shouldn't there be some birds in these trees? Draxor asks the party

Re: Draxor in the King's Forest
Aeryn squints at the trees. "Yeah, I guess that's strange. Wanna check one out?" The boy folds his map. "Yes. We're checking one out."
When you arrive at the closest hill with a dead tree on it, the boy says, "One of you guys check it out. I've heard of magic trees snatching people up and eating them, and I'm not going to be tree food." "Same way you thought that bats turn people into vampires?" "Exactly. The danger is your job. Go ahead." Aeryn sighs and walks up to it. When he kicks it, his foot passes into the tree. "Holy crap!" He pulls his foot out of the tree as easily as it went in and runs back to you two and scowls at the tree. "It doesn't look hungry to you, does it?"

Aeryn picks up a handful of dirt. "Ask this, treeface!" He throws the dirt at the tree, and the dirt goes through the tree. "What the-"

Re: Draxor in the King's Forest
Something is obviously strange about the tree, but you can't tell what. You're not sure if it really is a tree. Aeryn walks toward it with his sword out, obviously with wall of blades prepared. When he reaches it, he slowly extends his sword and it simply passes through the tree. "Ghost tree. Still magic. I was right." "Hills covered in ghost trees. Is this some kind of puzzle? Or a wizard's joke? Whaddya think, Drax?"

(You could try knowledge arcana? Since it's a trained only skill, the highest roll you could get is a 10. Or you could just try walking through it.)
"Maybe. I wonder where it goes. You think some druids enchanted all these trees to take you to different parts of the world?"
"Nah. Druids are secret and stuff. If they made a portal, they'd hide it so nobody else could have the fun."
"One way to find out. Jump in on 3, Drax?" Aeryn grips his sword and nods at you to start the countdown.

Re: Draxor in the King's Forest
Upon jumping in the tree, you see the inside of a tree almost like the outside of the tree was just paper thin. There's just grass beneath your feet, and Aeryn looks confused. "What the heck is going on here? A bunch of fake trees on hills?"
"Are you guys dead?"
Aeryn stomps his foot to make sure. "At least the hills are real. Who would have spent the time to make all these fake trees?"
"Okay, not dead. Good. Hey, someone's coming! Teleport back now! Dad told me to not talk to strangers!"

Re: Draxor in the King's Forest
You exit the tree and take a glance around. Still a couple hundred yards away to the Southwest is a dwarf leaning heavily on a long stick and hobbling toward you.
"Where did it take you? What did you see?"
"Kid. Chill. It's a fake tree."
"Nuh-uh! Fake? Lame! What about the map?"
"What about it? You wanted an adventure, right? Here it is. You've traveled out of the city and discovered a magical location."
"I wanted the treasure. There's an X beneath the tree... Trees? There's only one on the map." He sits down and looks at the map. "Why is there only one on the map?"
(If there's anything you want to do while the dwarf approaches, do it. You have a couple minutes.)
After a couple minutes of Aeryn and the Elf child processing their disappointment together, the dwarf arrives. He is wearing dirty rags, leans on the stick (which turns out to be a shovel), smiles a smile of rotten teeth and says, "Greetings! What brings you to the King's trees?"
The child hides the map behind his back.
"Uuuh... Just adventuring. Draxor and I are of the Undying Mercenary Company escorting this child on his quest to see the sights of Cormyr."
"Well, they are certainly a sight, are they not?" He casts a gaze at the trees spanning the peninsula. "Despite their wonder, they won't compare to the King's majesty when he returns. Have you been journeying long? Hungry maybe? Need a place to stay for a while? I don't get many visitors this far off the road."
Aeryn looks at you.
